Pursuing Self: Body. Mind. Spirit.

$9.99

PURSUING SELF presents a set of poems that speak to the lived experience of a hyphenated identity. It captures intimate thoughts, expresses counter-cultural vulnerability, and highlights honest emotions in poetic expression. The poems included in this book are an honest depiction of life in the body of a Nicaraguan-American man.

The poems are categorized under three themes: Culture (body), Psychology (mind), and Faith (spirit). These themes are meant to encompass the full range of experiences pertaining to the three elements I believe exist in every person. Culture includes expressions of who I am as a socialized being, including cultural, ethnic, and racial identity and experiences. A hyphenated identity has created a unique experience, which has taken decades to understand. The poems found under the umbrella of psychology provide a snapshot of the world that exists in my mind. The poems included here are polarizing, to say the least. They demonstrate the various phases of life I have weathered. Faith includes works that speak to the source that gives meaning to my life. These are heavily influenced by my graduate work and the journey towards a genuine expression of my faith through my Latin American background.
